Section 6.15 – Division of coeliac trunk and superior mesenteric artery

Complete disconnection of the mesenteric domain

Requires division of the superior mesenteric artery and coeliac trunk

They are divided once skeletonised

Their division means the mesenteric domain is now fully disconnected

And it can be removed, en bloc, from the abdominal cavity

Crucially, the mesentery is fully intact at excision

And all abdominal digestive organs are connected to it

This is a further example of complete disconnection

In this cadaver, the mesenteric domain has been fully detached and

Disconnected except for the superior mesenteric artery and coeliac trunk

Division of these major arterial trunks enables disconnection and

Removal of the mesenteric domain from the abdomen

This is a further example of division of the superior mesenteric

Artery and coeliac trunk

Both have been skeletonised and are divided

As the last step of mesenteric disconnection

The mesenteric domain can be removed,

The mesentery is intact, and all abdominal digestive organs

Are connected to it
